Spring cleaning is very "IN" these days thanks to tidying gurus like Marie Kondo. Collectively, it seems, we have all come around to the philosophy to “keep what makes you happy, and lose the things that don’t.” It’s a healthy development, and straight-forward in theory, but when it comes right down to it, starting off can be difficult.
Here Are Some Ideas to Kick Off Your Spring Sprucing:
1) Reduce Clutter
Every list of spring cleaning ideas incorporates some variation of this advice: get rid of the clutter! But what counts as clutter? Where do you start? Essentially, everything in your house should have a little room to breathe. Identify items and tidbits that are bunched on tables, in drawers, and in corners. These can range from: collectibles, Cables and cords, misc. items lying around. When in doubt, remember the golden rule: if it makes you happy, it stays, otherwise, it goes!
2) Give Your Windows Some TLC
Clean your window panes, and lose your old frames. New window treatments will help to change the character of a room and can add comfort, different colors, or a new look. That newness often adds to the feeling of freshness and excitement as the season's change.
3) Revive Kitchens and Bathrooms
Change the countertops, get new appliances, or add new cabinets. Check that all the hardware is working. If you have kids you might want to childproof the cabinets. Wiping down dirty sinks, cleaning dirty tiles, and generally making old surfaces new can bring new life into your home.
4) Fresh Paint
Bring some light colors into your home to make it feel lighter, bigger, and more friendly. Spring colors normally mean pastels—shades of yellow, green, pink, and blue. Purple is a great color to cleanse your palette.
5) Bring in More Greenery
Flowers, plants, succulents, anything leafy and full of life will evoke the vibrance and energy of springtime. One way to incorporate this idea is to create entryway vignettes for a more inviting entryway to your home.
6) Get Ready to Keep Cool
This is less cosmetic, and a little more “atmospheric.” But don’t forget to make sure that your air conditioning is ready and working. Make sure that it is checked, maintained, or updated. Make sure that ceiling fans are working and that lights are working. You might want to upgrade to some LED lights—they last longer, use less energy and are better for the environment. Not only that, but white light can even make a room feel cooler.
